HIgh in the central plateau of Mexico lies a lake -- the largest in Mexico. The sun sparkles nearly every day, and each evening is enchanted as the sun sets behind the mountains toward the Pacific. Nestled in a valley above Guadalajara, though the lake is polluted, the air seems moderately clear, though one might wish for more rigorous public health information.

Most descriptions of the weather for the Chapala area suggest that it's "Spring-like" nearly all the year around. Generally there are two seasons in such tropical climes -- a wet season and a dry season. As a generality, the rainy season often involves evening showers. Rarely, it's said, does a day go by without some sunshine. The long dry season apparently does yield some significant environmental differences with impacts on the lives of residents. The air becomes dry as dust flies and requires dilligent sweeping everywhere. This past season was one of firestorms in the Guadalajara area with some impact on air quality even in local communities.
Most expat residents of the area live on the north side of the lake, where the days are described as longer. The south side is beautiful, however, as we can testify from a terrific drive along the vast shores of Chapala. South side communities struck us as bustling agricultural or fishing communities with abundant charm. Development there seems only a matter of time. Expats as they become accustomed to the language and culture are likely to move more boldly to become members of such communities.
In January, Kenny and I visited the area and thoroughly enjoyed the area. I've long heard the advice about the importance of renting and living there to be sure that the place is for you. On the other hand, it was hard not to want to make, immediately, one of those serious decisions in life. We knew we wanted to live in the village of Ajijic, behind the mysterious walls. We'd not mind the clanging bells of the church or the noisy streets so much, we don't think. Walking everywhere would be such fun. ]]>
